As we continue with our Insurance Careers Month series, we are proud to continue to recognize our team members and the various paths they have taken into the insurance industry. Every career path is different, and each journey shows a unique mix of expertise, adaptability, and dedication to helping others. In this series, we continue to showcase the people whose background and point of view make our team stronger and shape the service we provide each day.
We are happy to introduce Karen Taylor, Senior Property Adjuster, as our second spotlight. Karen’s journey into insurance shows how important it is to accept new challenges and face change with confidence. She brings a thoughtful and steady approach and consistently makes a meaningful difference for her team and the clients she supports.
Q: How did you find your way into the insurance industry?
Karen Taylor: I began my career as a journalist straight out of college in 2003, starting with smaller newspapers in Indiana. In 2012, I moved to Louisville, KY, where I found myself designing pages for some of the largest newspapers in the country, including the Detroit Free Press, the Indianapolis Star, the Louisville Courier Journal, and many others.
As the newspaper industry struggled to survive, I realized it was time to pursue a new career and path. Through a friend, I joined Engle Martin as a property adjuster, knowing absolutely nothing about the field. I had never even stepped foot on a roof before. But I quickly discovered that the work was surprisingly similar to journalism. It is about gathering facts, documenting details accurately, and treating people fairly.
Q: What do you enjoy most about the work you do or the people you work with?
Karen Taylor: Engle Martin has been the most supportive group of colleagues and supervisors I have ever worked with. Even through challenging moments and the many learning curves I have experienced, it has been rewarding to feel supported by people who want to see me succeed and improve.
Q: What does “making an impact” look like in your day-to-day work?
Karen Taylor: Simply listening to someone can make the most meaningful difference. Especially for those experiencing a crisis, taking the time to truly listen to them not only helps you gain information, but also ensures they feel understood and heard in the moment.
Q: What advice would you give someone interested in a career in insurance?
Karen Taylor: My advice would be to always ask questions, even if they feel pointless or you feel embarrassed. Chances are, someone has asked the same question before. Also, this is a career that will challenge you in many ways but is always rewarding.
