Women’s History Month: Rachel Brunie on Confidence, Compassion, and Building a Reputation in Claims

Rachel Brunie on Confidence, Compassion, and Building a Reputation in Claims

During Women’s History Month, organizations and communities take time to recognize the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women who have helped shape industries, open doors, and inspire future generations. At Engle Martin, we are proud to highlight the voices and experiences of the talented women across our organization who continue to move the industry forward.

Rachel Brunie, Senior Property Adjuster based in Columbus, Ohio, has spent the past four years with Engle Martin supporting clients and policyholders with professionalism, technical expertise, and a people-first mindset. In recognition of Women’s History Month, Rachel shares her perspective on the role women play in the industry, the importance of continuous learning, and the strengths that help build trust in claims.

Honoring the Women Who Paved the Way

For Rachel, Women’s History Month is both a moment of reflection and a reminder of the opportunities women continue to create for the future.

“Celebrating Women’s History Month honors the resilience, grit, and professionalism of women who made space for us in the property insurance industry and the wider world today. It’s not all about looking back. It’s about acknowledging our role and strengths and the possibilities we can help create for the future.”

Rachel recognizes the trailblazers who helped expand opportunities for women in insurance and believes today’s professionals play an important role in continuing that progress.

Finding Inspiration in the Present Moment

When asked about a quote that inspires her, Rachel points to the words of poet Emily Dickinson:

“Forever is composed of nows.”

For Rachel, the quote is a powerful reminder that meaningful progress happens in the everyday moments, through the work we do, the conversations we have, and the commitment we bring to our careers.

Advice for Women Entering the Industry

Rachel encourages women who are new to the industry to embrace learning opportunities early and often. Building knowledge, she says, is the foundation for confidence.

“Learn as much as you can, as confidence is built through competence. Ask questions early, as experience compounds quickly in this industry. Get comfortable with climbing roofs and leading conversations.”

She also emphasizes the importance of professional integrity and reliability.

“Most importantly, build your reputation on fairness and follow through.”

By focusing on growth and consistency, Rachel believes professionals can create lasting careers and meaningful connections within the industry.

The Power of Emotional Intelligence in Claims

Rachel believes one of the most valuable strengths women bring to the insurance industry is emotional intelligence, an essential skill when working with clients navigating challenging situations.

“In claims, empathy and communication are just as important as technical skills. The ability to balance firmness with compassion is a powerful professional asset.”

She also notes that women often excel at reading situations and building trust quickly.

“Us ladies often excel at reading a room, de-escalating tension, attention to detail, and building trust quickly…skills that are ‘soft,’ but also strategic.”

These abilities help create stronger relationships with clients and partners while ensuring claims are handled with both professionalism and care.
